Play Guitar Fast! Speed Building Exercises

These exercises are intended to go along with the lesson Guitar Shredding 101: Building Speed, but are also useful warm-up / practice exercises on their own. These exercises do not have to be played with the note values as written – use them to practice different note values (quarter notes, 8th notes, 16th notes, triplets, etc.)

I recommend that you play each of these exercises 3 different ways when you are going through them:

  1. Play each exercise as written
  2. Practice playing each exercise legato: only pick the first note you play on each string and then hammer on / pull off the rest of the notes (obviously this only applies for exercises where there is more than one note per string)
  3. Play each exercise tremolo: pick each note 4 times (alternate picking of course!) before moving on to the next note

Although I have tabbed most of these exercises in 1st position I would recommend playing them all over the fretboard.

Exercise 3: For this exercise use fingers 3 and 4 on your fretting hand

Exercise 6: Major Arpeggio Pattern

Exercise 7: Minor Arpeggio Pattern

Exercise 9: This exercise will help you practice shifting positions. Although I have tabbed this exercise on the 6th / low-E string you should practice it on all strings.
